The deleterious effects of excessive salt intake are well known since many years. In clinical practice, the salt intake restriction was definitively proven to be efficient for controlling blood pressure, reason why it represents the first step in the treatment of hypertension.
The excessive salt intake results in water retaining and increase of blood pressure. Indirectly, this situation leads to a significant higher risk for cardiovascular diseases.
In Belgium, the average salt intake is about 10 grammes per day while the amount recommended by the World Health Organization is only 4 to 6 grammes per day! In case of hypertension or water retaining, daily salt intake restriction should be 3 grams.
There are 3 main sources of salt in food:
1) Table salt: it represents only 10 to 15 % of daily intake
2) Salt deriving from non-processed food (natural source): 5 to 10% of daily intake
3) Salt deriving from processed food : 75 to 80% of daily intake
